About Hospital

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Hospital .

The high rate of speed at which 48-year-old Ventura resident Leonard Castillo was traveling on Victoria Avenue prevented him from stopping in time, causing him to crash into the back of the van in which the students were riding.

A rear-end crash occurs every 17 seconds in the United States, and whiplash is often the result. Over one million injuries are reported, 200,000 of which are serious enough to cause long-term medical problems.
Research by leading biomedical engineer Dr. Brian Stemper from the Medical College of Wisconsin has produced new theories about whiplash injuries. Whiplash, caused by rear-end collisions at low rates of speed, can have multiple symptoms, including headaches, back and neck pain, and cognitive impairment.

"Originally we thought that the whiplash was a hyperextension injury," explained Dr. Stemper, "where the head rotates backward toward the thorax, and that leads to stretching in the soft tissues of the spine."
After extensive crash testing, he now believes that the correlation between the head and the chest underlies whiplash.

The key to preventing or limiting whiplash injuries is to minimize the relative motion between your head and chest, which can be accomplished by using a well-fitted head restraint.

Dr. Stemper has been working with U.S. automakers to make restraints as close to the head as possible. Based on his research, the positioning of your head could reduce whiplash injuries by 90%. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Rule requires the head restraints on all new cars to reach a minimum height of 29.5 inches upward from an occupant's hip and 2.2 inches behind an occupant's head, explains a California injury attorney.

Serious injuries are more likely to occur when the headrest is too low. It is important to remember that the top of the head restraint should reach at least as high as the top of your ear and be set back no more than 2.4 inches from your head. Of course, there will always be differences in vehicle size and people's posture and height, so these are only considered general guidelines.

A report by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, IIHS indicates that a high percentage of whiplash injury victims have long-term health problems several years after the accident.
Further safety measures to minimize neck injuries include:

- Always buy a car with the best possible crash rating. Check with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, (http://www.iihs.org/ ) for its rear seat head restraint ratings.

- Adjust your head restraint correctly according to your automobile's owner's manual.

- Remember to always wear a seatbelt. This will keep your torso in alignment during a crash.

- Always sit upright with good posture and, in the event of an accident, lean back so that your head is touching the head restraint and look straight ahead. This will minimize your chances for whiplash injury.

- Don't tailgate and speed! Remember the rule to always have one car length distance between you and next car for every 10mph you are traveling.
